Diabetic aunty whose given up hope?

my 37 yr old aunty has recently been diagnosed w/ type 2 diabetes. Years ago she was also diagnosed with benign brain tumors and glucoma. She is also a very overweight smoker. I think the diabetes was reallly the final blow and dimmed all of her hope to fight. She doesnt follow the low GI diet her doctor prescribes, hasnt quit smoking and very rarely exercises, and instead makes comments such as "whats the point, im going to die anyway, look at all the things that are wrong with me". what can i, or anyone for that matter do/say to help her get through this and start looking after herself?
Answer:
There is hope, they have cured diabetes in mice, can people be far behind.
Since knowledge is power, the more you know, the better you will feel.
Take her to a diabetes support group and help her make new friends.
Subscribe to several diabetes magazines, see a dietitian for even more info.
Help her to count carbs and check the carbs in foods.
Good luck.
have her talk to a counselor/therapist. that the only thing that can help, it sounds like she is very depressed and may need some meds. Otherwise just help her see the positive side of things, and possibly see if there are any local support groups.
My husband is 38 and is on dialysis already from diabeties. He's had several complications due to this and it depressed him very badly. I called his doctor with my concerns for him and he talked with my husband and perscribed him some meds. Doing better now but still has a bad day every now and again.
